Falstaff: I will not lend thee a penny.
Pistol: Why then the world’s mine oyster, Which I with sword will open
Falstaff: Not a penny.
From Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor
Starting out 2019, there is a lot of Chaos (capital C) and in these uncertain times it will be easy for most to forget the big picture. 2018 for me was a true roller coaster, but saw some incredible changes in my life. I’d say 2018 was a great success for me personally and professionally though, and I thought maybe I can share with you three things that helped me make it so.
- Do what you love: I know that as responsible adults we all vie to do what we must, but you need to also do what you love. Inside you is a child that hasn’t quite gone away yet – you need to satisfy him by giving him something to enjoy. I often tell people “I’m just a big kid”. Believe it or not, you are too – so give make sure to do what you love and to enjoy it so that you can have the mental stamin to do what you must.
- Ignore the haters, disbelievers (in you), and condescending pricks: Whether you’re succeeding or failing these people will always be around. I n fact you should revel in the knowledge that they will always exist. Take pleasure in knowing that they’re there for a reason-to keep you sharp and on point. Without them you will disintegrate into mediocrity. Nonetheless don’t pay them any attention, but keep them around to help keep you motivated.
- Move forward, unapologetically: The destination is, of course, important, but the journey is equally so. The most important thing when facing great obstacles is to keep moving regardless of all the things and people weighing you down. This is your journey and you should never have to apologize for travelling it. If they don’t want to come along – fine! You just keep moving forward. Onwards and upwards.
Happy New Year.
